Detailed Study on the life of Eskimo | এস্কিমোর জীবনের উপর একটি বিস্তারিত অধ্যয়ন

01. Origin of Eskimo:

As per the ‘Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’, the term ‘Eskimo’ actually came from the French word ‘Esquimaux’, meaning one who nets snowshoes. From the Montagnais word ‘Eskimo’ means meat eater. In the Algoskine language ‘Eskimo’ means one who eats raw meat. Eskimos have two main branches.

One branch is located in western Alaska called the ‘Yupik’ (or Yuit) Yupik tribe of south-central Alaska and the other branch is called the ‘Inuit’ tribe in the far east of Russia. So now they are not called Eskimo but are more popularly known as Yupik and Inuit, in some areas they are known as Inupiat. In fact, they are descendants of the ‘Thule’ culture of the islands near the Arctic Circle.

 02. Location where Eskimos can be found:

Where nature is stingy, where their year-round sunlight is almost elusive, where islands are isolated by very cold seas and bays, where life and livelihood are very hard, the world’s most primitive people live there. The Yupik and Inuit indigenous peoples of the Eskimos are not the exception.

  • The Inuit indigenous peoples of Eskimos live in Siberia, Alaska, in the northwestern Arctic Circle, on the outskirts of Nunavut, Quebec, and Greenland, and on the shores of the Bering Sea. Proto-Inuit was the ancestor of all modern Inuit.
  • They developed in coastal Alaska by the 1000s and spread eastward across northern Canada, reaching Greenland by the 13th century. It is believed that the Vikings had contact with the Proto-Inuit indigenous peoples. The Proto-Inuit were carriers of the Thule culture. They have replaced the ancient Dorset culture.
  • The Yupik Indigenous people live in Alutic, or Sugpiaq, western Alaska, and south-central Alaska. Yupik or Central Alaskan Yupiks live along the Yukon-Cuscoquim Delta, along the northern shores of the Cuscocoim River and Bristol Bay, in the Gulf of Nushagak, and on the Naknek River near the northern Alaska Peninsula and the Alaska Aegean Gulf. The Siberian Yupik, includes the Nouakchott, the Chaplin’s, the Russian Far East, the Sibenik, and Western Alaska, St. Lawrence Island.

03. Physical Environment where Eskimos stay:

a. Climate:

Eskimos are mainly inhabitants of the tundra climate near the Arctic Circle. Tundra Climate is a very cold region covered with treeless snow near the North Pole of the region. Winter here is long-lasting. During this time the average temperature stays below freezing for about nine months of the year. Summer is almost invisible. It goes without saying that it does not rain. The snow in this region is dry and light and it causes blizzards with strong winds.

b. Vegetation:

The word tundra means treeless region. Due to the extreme cold, it can be said that stemmed trees are not seen. Algae and small grasses and shrubs can be observed in this region. However, there is some sunlight in the southern region. So birch and willow trees grow.

c. Animals:

Warm-blooded animals live in the tundra region. Moreover, due to climatic conditions, the skin of animals is covered with thick and thick fur. The number of animals in this region is also quite low. Only eight species of terrestrial animals are found here.

Notable among them are white bears, polar foxes, kangaroos, and rats. The number of bird species is high here. However, 114 of the 160 migratory species are marine. Notable among the mammals are polar rabbits, polar foxes, and owls among birds. Among the marine mammals, Shil and Sindhughatak are the main ones.

04. Population of Eskimos:

The Eskimos are the most widespread indigenous people in the world. These people are scattered over an area of more than three and a half thousand miles. About 50,000 Eskimos live in the Arctic Circle and its surrounding countries.

According to the 2018 census, there are about 2000 Eskimos in Siberia, about 2500 in Alaska, 10000 in Greenland, 10000 in Canada, and 3000 Eskimos in Labrador.

05. Shelter of Eskimos:

Due to the climatic conditions, their homes demand different features.

It is winter here most of the year. In winter they live in houses made of ice. These houses are called ‘Igloo’. When they go hunting in the winter, they build a temporary igloo about 2 meters in diameter in just a few hours. When a few families live together, they make relatively large igloos. They light a lamp in the igloo with summer algae and seal fish fat. In the summer they live in tents made of seal skin. These tents are called ‘tupic’. Many seals make this tent by sewing fish skins and sticking them to wooden frames.

06. Physical Features:

The elongated body is usually very strong. Their average height is 163 cm. Their skin color is yellow and their hair color is black. A round body shape and heavy clothing seem a bit shorter figure.

07. Hunting & Food gathering:

Winter fishing is a livelihood for Eskimos. In the native language, the prey is called ‘Mouchak’. Which literally means wait. In winter, they dig holes in the ice-covered sea and wait with their weapons for prey next to the hole, which is the main feature of their prey’s livelihood. The Eskimos make a boat called a kayak. This boat is made of whale bones and seal fish skin.

During the winter, they roam with hounds. In Greenland, kayaks are used not only for navigation but also for hunting large animals. The harpoon made by the Eskimos is a special weapon used in hunting. They hunt whales, seals, and seahorses. These are used in the preparation of Eskimo food, clothing, and various household items.

08. Herd:

Hunting, as well as animal husbandry, is part of the livelihoods of the Eskimos. However, sheep rearing is suitable for the climate here. Eskimos gather in one place in the spring with a flock of sheep. Most likely take them to summer fields. They make cheese from some milk for winter consumption. The pet Reindeer and musk deer.

09. Clothing:

They wear full-body coverings to protect themselves from extreme cold. They make clothing from the feathers of birds, and wool from reindeer and other animals. Eskimo women mainly make clothes. They usually use glasses to protect the eyes from the reflection of sunlight on the ice. Fancy spectacles made of fancy ivory are sometimes seen using them.

10. Future:

The hyena’s vision of civilized man is gradually expanding towards the resources of the Arctic Circle. So its detrimental effect on the life and livelihood of the Eskimos can be noticed. Among them are the recent use of guns for hunting and the use of improved speedboats, which are making a huge difference in the way of life of Eskimos in the future. With the light of civilization shining, the deadly disease of civilized people’s uncivilized behavior is spreading among them. The existence of their culture is going to disappear with the passage of time.

11. Conclusion:

Each nation has its own unique characteristics and traditions. Eskimos are not the exception. At present, with the advent of modern civilization, their lives and livelihoods have changed. The use of iron needles instead of bone needles has greatly enhanced their skills in clothing and boat preparation.

The use of speed boats instead of boats, and the use of guns instead of harpoons, has made their hunting much easier. Flour and tea have found a place in their diet. Helicopters and airlines have greatly reduced their isolation. It is hoped that in the near future they too will join hands with the civilized people in the great task of developing the world.
