Sea Expedition of Columbus |

Introduction: –

Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in the house of Tati, a native of Genoa, Italy. In Europe, the Middle Ages began to decline. People are gradually becoming interested in the practice of knowledge outside of Christian theology. Columbus moved to Padua, a port city in northeastern Italy, near Venice. The study started there. Growing up, he studied astronomy, geology, etc., and Christian theology at the university. It is here that Columbus dreams of seeing a new country, new lands, and new cities.

Italy was surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. He was surrounded by Asia, Africa, and Europe. That is, the Mediterranean Sea was a huge closed lake. So, after completing his studies in search of the open sea, he set out in 1470, crossing the Tagus River to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Lisbon was then called Henry the Navigator. Because King Henry was born here, he was very enthusiastic about sea expeditions in those days. Lisbon was a river and seaport together. In front is the Atlantic Ocean. Here Columbus married a wealthy Portuguese woman. He lived on a small Atlantic island called Madeira. Seeing the vast expanse of the Atlantic, he began to imagine the shores on the other side. Portugal was then quite adept at shipping. Portugal is sending multiple expeditions to the coast of Africa. Hearing this, Columbus set out on the Gold Coast of South Africa and Iceland in the north. The main purpose of saving experience about the sea. Arriving in Iceland, Columbus first learned that the Viking tribes of Norway had reached an unknown land on the other side of the sea about 400 years ago. However, they could not stay there in conflict with each other for long. It was a huge country in the western hemisphere. Columbus can learn more in the story that there is a lot of gold in the country that is found in the river.

Columbus decided to go to this unknown country. But he wants huge money for long sea expeditions. He first went to the King of Portugal for help. The condition was that if successful, Columbus and his descendants should be given aristocratic status. And he will get one-tenth of the accumulated wealth. There were not many demands but the king disagreed. Columbus came to the courts of England and France with the same proposal, but all turned away. No one could trust such an impossible plan and no one agreed to give their child the status of nobility.

But Columbus is not the one to give up. This time he appeared before the king of Spain. Gave an additional offer across. He will preach Christianity in the new country. Spain was then engaged in the eradication of Islam and the propagation of Christianity from its soil. This time Queen Isabella was impressed. The Queen of Spain agrees to help Columbus.

First Expedition: –

Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean a total of four times. The first voyage was on August 3, 1492. Columbus jumped into the deep water with three ships (Santamaria, Pinta, and Nina) and 99 sailors with government help. The journey started from the port of Palos. Relatives of the sailors gathered. The wailing began not in the sound of victory but in the uncertainty of whether he would be able to return.

The ship sailed on the known waters – first to the southwest of the Canary Islands, then eastward to the west in the wind direction. But we had to wait a long time for the wind in the canary. Finally, on September 4, the wind blew across the ship. After 10 days in a row, the wind blew. Columbus calmed the sailors by telling them stories of how much gold they could get when they arrived in a new country when everyone on board was restless. When the wind blows again, the ship moves forward, this is how the journey continues.

Finally, on October 12, 1492, Columbus landed on an unknown green island. He thought this was the coast of the so-called Indies described by Marco Polo. It was later discovered that it was the Bahamas or Guanahani Island.

Several locals attended to see Columbus and his associates. Their skin color is copper, their bodies are half-naked, and their neck and ears are adorned with gold jewelry. Columbus is overwhelmed to see gold jewelry. Now it’s your turn to search. For three days Columbus led sailors from one side of the Bahamas to the other. There was no way to hear about gold from the people of the island because of language problems.

Meanwhile, the ship Santamaria was wrecked by a strong storm and the water began to rush in. Local residents rescued the sailors. Martin Alonso Pinzon, the captain of the Pinta ship, suddenly disappeared without informing Columbus. In fact, he set sail for Spain in a bid to give the news of the discovery of the Golden Land to the king first. Columbus left 40 sailors in Santa Maria and Nina boarded the ship with the rest.  The island on which 40 sailors began to settle was named La Navidad.

This time Columbus went from one island to another. The first island was named San Salvador, the second island was named Santa Maria, the third island was named Ferdinand, and the fourth island was named Isabella. This time he came to a big island on 27th October. Its name is Cuba. Then he arrived in Haiti. Columbus named Haiti the Spanish island…

Meanwhile, the logistics gradually decreased. Columbus decided to return home. Finally left on 27 December. In the middle of the storm, Nina’s ship sank. No one had any hope of survival. Columbus returned to Lisbon, Portugal on March 4, 1493, with a broken body. The King and Queen of Spain spoke on May 20 about whether Columbus was given state honors and Columbus was granted the right to rule the discovered islands. He also promised to help in the second campaign.

Second Expedition:-

Columbus’s second expedition began in September 1493. Accompanied by 17 ships, 1,200 to 1,500 white Christians interested in immigration, 5 priests who could help with the conversion, and hundreds of soldiers to seize and plunder the wealth, but with no women. Although the organization of the second expedition was so large, there was no way to record the details of the expedition. So nothing special in detail is known about Columbus’s 2nd expedition.

It is known from the brief details of the companions that they first reached an island called Zaminika on November 3, 1493. Man-eaters live there. Then on November 28 go to La Navidad Island. Last time Columbus left 40 sailors there. Columbus saw the castle destroyed, and the scattered corpses of Christians lying around. Columbus quickly left the island and came to Hispaniola. He brought down those who were brought here for immigration. Christian left the priests to preach Catholicism. This time he went to Cuba. A few days later he returned to the island of Hispaniola. This time Columbus got involved in a dispute with the locals. Soldiers captured and killed countless Red Indians.

Columbus built forts on almost all the islands and forced the locals to collect gold. He ordered every resident over the age of 14 to deposit three fingers of gold every three months. Residents who could not deposit gold were ordered to have their noses and ears cut off. In June 1496, Columbus returned to Spain. He brought with him hundreds of Red Indian prisoners.

Third Expedition: –

In the first and second expeditions, Columbus could not reach the mainland. Only a few islands in the Caribbean Sea were able to occupy and rule. The third expedition set sail from the civil port on May 30, 1498, seeking to enter the mainland. This time he took six ships with him. This time he descended to the 70-degree axis to the south. Then proceeded west. Finally, on August 1, he landed on the shores of a new continent. He named the arrow Holy Trinity. He wandered the coast for three weeks. Departed for Hispaniola on 22 August. On the way, he saw the colors in the west were more beautiful and green. He first thought it was not an island, but a huge continent. On 24 August he arrived at the port of Santo Domingo. This port was built by Columbus’ brother Bartholomew, whom Columbus left on the second expedition. What will happen if the port is well furnished, protests and revolts are going on inside.  And the persecution of Bartholomew in the name of suppressing the protests is going on. This angered both whites and Red Indians. Columbus was forced to send two ships back to Spain in October 1496 to protest. That did not save the end. Columbus and his two brothers were taken, prisoner. They were deported back to Spain in October 1500.

Fourth Expedition: –

Columbus returned to the country at the end of the third expedition but remained in prison for about a month and a half. He was released on December 12, 1500. The Queen of Spain forgave Columbus for his dream of getting a lot of gold from the new country in the future.

Columbus did not sit still. He wrote two books. The first one is called ‘Privilege’ and the second one is called ‘Bhavishyadani’. The subject of the first book was similarly deprived of the earnings, titles, and prizes due to Columbus by the King and Queen of Spain. He handed over the book to influential Spanish representatives and merchants. At the same time, he appealed to the royal court again. This second book is incomplete. Here is a trace of Columbus’s personality.

Permission for the fourth expedition came from the king on 26 February 1502. The permit had two conditions. Firstly, you can’t go to Hispanic, 2ndly, you will have detailed information about what you got wherever you go. Go with an accountant for this. Charlene Columbus was ready in two months without delay. He sailed with four ships and 143 sailors on May 9, 1502, accompanied by his son Fernando.

Columbus’s fourth expedition was devastated by a natural disaster. He was barred from going to Hispaniola but reached the port of Santodomingo in a severe storm. He sought permission for the shelter but did not get permission. On the night of June 30, there was a strong storm. Columbus’s ships were swept away. Many sailors died. Columbus managed to save his ship and sailed to the coast of Jamaica. He then sailed along the coasts of Honduras and Nicaragua to a place called Veragua. He returned to Jamaica a few days ago. When he came here, he became very ill. He lost the ability to walk. Finally, in June 1504, a ship named Hispaniola rescued the ailing Columbus and his companions. The governor of the forbidden area for him is given shelter. After a break in the middle, Columbus Fernando and 23 others set off for Spain. Columbus probably returned to Sanlucar de Barrameda on November 7, 1504. Shortly afterward, Queen Isabella, Columbus’s chief patron, died. The story of Columbus’s fourth expedition is very public.

Columbus was rich. He was one of the richest men in all of Europe in this era. In a sick body on 19 May 1506, he bequeathed all the property to his son and brother in a will. The next day 20 May Columbus died.

Evaluation: –

Columbus’ voyage, though quite interesting and colorful with its many ups and downs, did not leave the controversy behind. A group of historians has seen Columbus as a cruel and brutal administrator. This description is found in the pages of the ‘History of Indiza’, in the book of Bartolome Kansas, the historian of Spain. The story of Columbus’s expedition shows that he never accepted the locals as a people. Indigenous people cut into pieces to test the edge of knives and swords. Innocent children were beheaded. Columbus wiped out a large part of those whom he named Red Indians.

There is evidence that many discoverers went to America even before Columbus. So it is also true that Columbus didn’t discover a new world. There was a civilization before Columbus. Muslim sailors also went to America before and after Columbus, but none of them were as brutal as Columbus. But history is sometimes quite cruel. Even after 500 years, Columbus, who has taken the place of the great man of history, is being torn to shreds by his identity as an anti-people dictator and barbaric ruler.
